Aqaba – The National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) conducted field monitoring visits from 12 to 15 October 2026 to the Ma’an and Aqaba Correctional and Rehabilitation Centres, as well as several temporary detention facilities in both governorates. These visits formed part of the Centre’s ongoing efforts to monitor the conditions of persons deprived of their liberty and strengthen safeguards for the protection of human rights in accordance with relevant national legislation and international standards.
The visits aimed to follow up on the implementation of recommendations issued following previous monitoring visits, assess detention and accommodation conditions, examine the availability of essential services and healthcare, and verify respect for the human dignity and fundamental rights of detainees and inmates.
The monitoring activities also included reviewing procedures followed within the facilities, documenting positive practices and key observations requiring further follow-up, and assessing the measures taken by the Public Security Directorate to implement the Centre’s recommendations following its previous visit in July 2025.
In this context, the NCHR observed that several of its previous recommendations had been implemented and that a number of issues previously raised with the relevant authorities had been addressed. These developments underscore the importance of continued monitoring and follow-up in improving detention conditions and strengthening respect for the rights of persons deprived of their liberty.
These visits form part of the NCHR’s oversight mandate to promote the principles of the rule of law and justice, uphold the humane treatment of persons deprived of their liberty, and contribute to improving detention environments in accordance with national and international human rights standards.
