The National Centre for Human Rights Receives Canadian Ambassador to Discuss Human Rights Cooperation

Ms. Samar Al-Haj Hassan, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR), and Mr. Jamal Al-Shamayleh, Commissioner General for Human Rights, received H.E. Mr. Louis-Martin Aumais, Ambassador of Canada to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, at the Centre’s headquarters to discuss prospects for strengthening cooperation in the field of human rights.

During the meeting, the participants reviewed the role of the National Centre for Human Rights in promoting and protecting human rights, as well as recent developments in Jordan’s human rights landscape, particularly in light of the Kingdom’s comprehensive political, economic, and administrative modernization process, which aims to strengthen an environment that safeguards rights and reinforces the principles and values of human rights.

The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and the Commissioner General also discussed with the Canadian Ambassador a number of issues of mutual interest. Their discussions covered the key themes of the Centre’s Annual Report on the Human Rights Situation in Jordan, its Strategic Plan, and its programmes aimed at raising awareness of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, with particular emphasis on initiatives that empower women, youth, and persons with disabilities. They underscored the importance of strengthening international partnerships that support the advancement of human rights standards and contribute to enhancing the Centre’s institutional capacities and programmes.

For his part, Ambassador Aumais commended the National Centre for Human Rights for its pivotal role in monitoring and assessing the human rights situation, receiving and handling complaints, and issuing annual and thematic reports. He also expressed Canada’s readiness to continue providing technical assistance and capacity-building support to further strengthen the Centre’s programmes.

The meeting reflects the National Centre for Human Rights’ commitment to strengthening cooperation and partnerships with diplomatic missions and international organizations working in the field of human rights, in support of national efforts to promote and protect human rights in Jordan.
