The world observes the International Day for Universal Access to Information on 28 September. The Day was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2015 to highlight the importance of access to information in combating corruption in its various forms and countering false and misleading information.
The theme of the International Day for Universal Access to Information 2026 is: “Ensuring Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The Role of Access to Information in Addressing Information Disorder.”
In this context, the Center emphasizes that international human rights standards recognize the right of access to information, particularly under Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a State Party. This right is also protected and enshrined in the national legal framework through the Law on Guaranteeing the Right of Access to Information, which guarantees individuals the exercise of this right and regulates its implementation.
In this regard, and with reference to the Center’s 2025 report on the human rights situation in the Kingdom, which was recently released, the report highlighted the efforts undertaken to strengthen the right of access to information, including through capacity-building, training, and qualification of personnel within the entities responsible for implementing the law. At the same time, the report recommended continuing the current efforts to raise awareness of the right of access to information among relevant stakeholders and expanding such efforts to include greater public awareness, thereby enabling individuals to effectively exercise this right.
