The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR), Ms. Samar Al-Haj Hassan, and the Commissioner General, Mr. Jamal Al-Shamayleh, received the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Jordan, Ms. Sheri Anderson, accompanied by the newly appointed Human Rights Adviser at the Resident Coordinator’s Office, Mr. Saffiruddeen Al-Sayyid, to discuss ways of strengthening the strategic partnership between the two sides and to follow up on joint initiatives aimed at supporting national efforts to align national policies with international human rights standards, in line with Jordan’s political, economic, and public sector modernization pathways.
Ms. Al-Haj Hassan and Mr. Al-Shamayleh welcomed the visiting delegation and congratulated Mr. Saffiruddeen Al-Sayyid on assuming his new role as Human Rights Adviser. Both sides reaffirmed the depth of the strategic partnership between the National Centre for Human Rights and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Jordan, emphasizing the importance of expanding dialogue and consultation between national institutions and international partners to further strengthen the national human rights system.
The meeting reviewed the key joint initiatives currently being implemented, foremost among them the outcomes of the consultative meetings on “Business and Human Rights,” which aim to promote an investment and development environment founded on respect for human rights and decent work standards. The participants also discussed mechanisms to support the National Centre for Human Rights’ Strategic Plan (2026–2030), with the objective of further strengthening the Centre’s oversight and advisory roles in accordance with international best practices.
During the meeting, Ms. Samar Al-Haj Hassan affirmed that Jordan continues to advance steadily in implementing its comprehensive modernization agenda, aimed at reinforcing the national human rights framework and the rule of law, while placing particular emphasis on protecting the rights of groups most in need of protection, including women, children, older persons, and persons with disabilities. She also highlighted the Centre’s growing regional and international role, noting that the National Centre for Human Rights will host the 15th International Conference of National Human Rights Institutions, scheduled to take place in early December this year.
For her part, Ms. Sheri Anderson commended the National Centre for Human Rights for its pivotal oversight and advisory role in Jordan. She reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to providing the technical and institutional support necessary to enable the Centre to implement its strategic plans, promote public awareness of human rights, and broaden dialogue with national and international partners in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides underscored the importance of maintaining close coordination and enhancing joint cooperation through the development of collaborative mechanisms that contribute to strengthening the national human rights protection system and expanding regional and international partnerships with relevant human rights stakeholders.
