Mafraq – The National Center for Human Rights (NCHR) concluded the fourth training course in Mafraq Governorate today as part of the project entitled “Access to Justice and Legal Empowerment in Jordan: Towards an Effective and Sustainable Legal Aid System.”
Nisreen Zureiqat, Commissioner for Promotion at the Center and Project Director, stated that the course held in Mafraq forms part of the second phase of advanced training, which comprises approximately 15 courses scheduled to take place across various cities and governorates of the Kingdom.
The three-day course, attended by a number of lawyers and legal experts, focused on the conceptual framework of legal aid and the role of lawyers in providing such assistance at both the national and international levels.
Participants received comprehensive training on the concept of legal aid, its various forms, and its impact on groups most in need of such services.
Several sessions also addressed the legislative framework governing legal aid, including the Constitution, the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Jordan Bar Association Law, and the legal aid regulations administered by the Ministry of Justice.
Particular emphasis was placed on fair trial guarantees, both during the preliminary investigation stage and throughout the enforcement of sentences.
The course also aimed to build upon and expand the knowledge participants had acquired during the introductory training sessions, particularly regarding international human rights standards and relevant international conventions.
Zureiqat explained that the training included an overview of the Ministry of Justice’s role in providing legal aid services, with particular attention to procedures for appointing lawyers, determining legal fees, and conducting legal representation before the courts. These discussions formed part of ongoing efforts to improve the legal aid system and enhance the delivery of such services.
It is worth noting that the training sessions were delivered by several experts and specialists from both within and outside the National Center for Human Rights.
External lecturers included Dr. Mousa Al-Awawdeh from the Ministry of Justice and Taghreed Al-Daghmi from the Wa’i Center for Human Rights.
Lecturers from the National Center for Human Rights included Board of Trustees members Dr. Mohammad Al-Tarawneh and Hadeel Abdel Aziz; Issa Al-Maraziq, Director of the Awareness and Training Department; and lawyers Nisreen Zureiqat and Omar Bani Mustafa.
