As part of its mandate to protect and promote human rights and monitor the human rights situation in Jordan, the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) conducted a series of field monitoring visits to a number of hospitals and comprehensive and primary health centres in the governorates of Ma’an and Aqaba. The visits covered Al-Mreigha Comprehensive Health Centre, Al-Jafr Comprehensive Health Centre in Ma’an Governorate, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Field Hospital in Aqaba, the Forensic Medicine Unit at Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Hospital in Aqaba, affiliated with the Directorate of Forensic Medicine in Ma’an Governorate, as well as Aqaba Comprehensive Health Centre, Princess Basma Comprehensive Health Centre, Wadi Rum Primary Health Centre, and Al-Disi Primary Health Centre.
The visits aimed to assess the quality of curative, preventive, and other healthcare services provided to citizens, monitor service delivery, infrastructure, and medical facilities, and identify the principal challenges facing these institutions. The visits were conducted in line with the standards relating to the right to health, the right to a healthy environment, and the right to an adequate standard of living.
Based on the Ministry of Health’s response to the Centre’s previous monitoring reports, the Centre noted positive progress in the implementation of a number of recommendations and observations contained in its earlier reports, particularly those relating to hospitals and comprehensive and primary health centres in Aqaba Governorate. This reflects the Ministry’s commitment to improving healthcare services and enhancing their quality. The Centre emphasizes the importance of continuing to respond to the observations and recommendations contained in its monitoring reports, as this contributes to the further improvement of healthcare services.
At the same time, the Centre documented a number of additional observations and recommendations, which will be formally communicated to the relevant authorities. The Centre will continue to follow up on their implementation with the aim of addressing existing challenges, improving the quality of healthcare services, and strengthening the enjoyment of economic, social, and cultural rights, foremost among them the right to health, the right to a healthy environment, and the right to an adequate standard of living.
These visits form part of NCHRs’ nationwide field monitoring programme, which is implemented across all governorates of the Kingdom in line with its mandate to monitor the human rights situation, strengthen cooperation with relevant public institutions, and contribute to the development of public policies and services in a manner that safeguards human rights and protects the dignity of all citizens.
