On Human Rights Day, Khaldoun Al-Nusour, Member and Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees at the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR), participated in a special seminar organized by the Committee on Party and National Culture within the National Charter Party under the title: “Human Rights and the Political Parties Scene – Complementarity of Roles in the Political Modernization Project.”
Engineer Sanaa Mehyar, Assistant Secretary-General for Party and National Culture, explained that this seminar was organized in partnership with the National Centre for Human Rights to coincide with the global celebration of Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10. The event underscored the importance of entrenching principles of rights and freedoms and strengthening their presence in public life, as well as affirming the National Charter Party’s commitment to promoting a culture of dialogue and positive engagement between political parties and human rights institutions. She highlighted the NCHR’s essential role as a national pillar in protecting rights and freedoms, and its significant contribution to monitoring, awareness-raising, and legislative influence at both the regional and international levels. For this reason, the party sought to bring together experts and practitioners to shed light on the relationship between human rights and their protection within the political party landscape, and to emphasize the importance of embedding democratic culture and citizenship within party work.
During his participation, Al-Nusour emphasized the pivotal role played by the National Centre for Human Rights in supporting a political environment founded on respect for rights and freedoms, and ensuring that party work is practiced within a framework of equality, the rule of law, and equal opportunities. He also stressed that strengthening human rights within the political party scene contributes to building more effective political institutions that are responsive to citizens’ needs, thereby enhancing public trust in the democratic process.
The seminar also featured the participation of the Human Rights Commissioner General, Mr. Jamal Al-Shamayleh, who underscored the importance of integrating human rights principles into political and party work. He noted that enhancing political participation and respecting public freedoms constitute a fundamental pillar of any successful reform process. Al-Shamayleh explained that the NCHR continues its efforts to monitor the environment of party work and ensure its alignment with national and international human rights standards, while providing recommendations that support the development of this environment in a way that strengthens community participation and protects individual rights. In this context, he highlighted His Majesty King Abdullah II’s continued commitment to advancing political and party life and promoting active participation based on democratic principles and the rule of law.
The seminar addressed key challenges and opportunities in Jordan’s political reform process, as well as the importance of aligning party work with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, particularly those related to freedom of opinion and expression, freedom of assembly and association, and the role of political parties in defending citizens’ social, economic, and political rights.
This event comes as part of the National Centre for Human Rights’ participatory efforts to promote human rights awareness and engage actively with various societal institutions to uphold the values of justice and human dignity, in line with its mission to protect and safeguard rights in all aspects of life.
