NCHR Promotes Youth Political Participation through Dialogue at Al-Hussein Bin Talal University (AHU)

In the context of its efforts to promote conscious political participation among youth, the National Center for Human Rights organized a dialogue session at Al-Hussein Bin Talal University titled:
“Students and Party Life in Jordan: Towards Effective Youth Participation,”
in the presence of the Acting Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Mohammad Al-Naeemat, with the participation of a number of academic and administrative staff members, as well as more than 50 male and female students.
The session was opened by Dr. Mohammad Al-Naeemat, who welcomed the attendees and emphasized the important role of universities in raising students’ awareness and enhancing their engagement in public affairs.
The session focused on key thematic areas presented by the Commissioner for Promotion at the Center, Ms. Nesreen Zureikat, who reviewed the transformations witnessed in Jordan’s political system. She also linked the outcomes of the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System with the opportunities available to youth, emphasizing that legislative developments have provided a supportive environment for their participation; however, the real challenge lies in effectively implementing this framework on the ground.
In addition, lawyer Rami Ahmad Al-Hashem, Head of the National Legislation Unit, addressed the legal framework governing political party work, explaining that the Political Parties Law No. (7) of 2022 marked a qualitative shift in empowering youth politically. He stressed the importance of providing a neutral university environment that guarantees freedom of political engagement without repercussions, thereby strengthening trust between students and the political system.
In a related context, lawyer Omar Bani Mustafa, Head of the Awareness and Training Unit, highlighted the role of the National Center for Human Rights within its legal mandate to protect and promote human rights. He noted that the Center’s role extends beyond monitoring and documentation to include awareness-raising, capacity-building, and direct engagement with youth, contributing to the promotion of a culture of rights and freedoms.
The session also featured an interactive discussion with students, who expressed a number of challenges related to political party engagement, foremost among them societal reservations and concerns about the impact of political participation on their future opportunities. This reflects an existing gap between the legislative framework and its practical application.
At the conclusion of the session, commemorative shields were exchanged between the Center and the University, reaffirming the importance of strengthening institutional partnership and supporting efforts aimed at empowering youth to actively engage in public life. This activity falls under the programs of the Legislation Directorate within the Promotion Commissionerate.
