The National Center for Human Rights reviews the parallel report on the Convention against Torture.

The National Center for Human Rights participated in the 81st session of the Committee Against Torture held at the United Nations office in Geneva. The delegation included Commissioner General Jamal Shamayleh and Protection Commissioner Dr. Nahla Al-Momani, who took part in discussing Jordan’s fourth report on the application of the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment. The centre submitted a parallel report to Jordan’s fourth report, addressing the list of issues adopted by the committee.

During the closed session on November 5, dedicated to the centre as the national human rights institution in Jordan, the Commissioner General highlighted the centre’s broad legal mandate, based on Law No. (15) of 2006 and its amendments. He also pointed out key challenges in legislation, policies, and practices regarding combating the crime of torture, while noting significant positive developments in Jordan in this regard. He offered recommendations aimed at achieving full implementation of the convention.

Additionally, the delegation responded to questions posed by the committee regarding the status of the implementation and enforcement of the Convention Against Torture in Jordan. At the end of the meeting, the committee chair praised the comprehensiveness and accuracy of the information provided by the National Center for Human Rights.

It is worth noting that Jordan submitted its fourth report to the Committee Against Torture, which is under review from November 7-8. The committee will present its final observations and recommendations to the Jordanian government.
